Andrew Ooi
Inspidea Animation Studios
During the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, Andrew Ooi and co-founder CJ See started a software distribution and systems integration company called Tourific. In 2002, the duo saw an opportunity in a locally-produced educational animation series which led to the launch of Inspidea.
In their first entrepreneurial venture with Tourific, Andrew and CJ were introduced to Toon Boom Harmony, the 2D animation software that inspired the duo to create cartoons. Inspidea, (which is a portmanteau of the words “inspire” and “idea”) was initially launched with a mission to create animated series for children to learn Science and Mathematics in English. Their very first production “Johan the Young Scientist” was self-funded and was not successful in Malaysia. Undeterred, they brought the title to MIPCOM in France which led to 28 international networks picking up the show, which has since been aired in more than 33 countries.
Today, Inspidea does both original IP creation as well as contract servicing work for major studios all over the world, even earning themselves a BAFTA nomination! Andrew and CJ built the company from a 4 person team to 260 artists and designers, becoming one of the largest creative studio in Malaysia and South East Asia. Inspidea is a 100%-export company and over the years has built a rapport of A-list international clients such as Warner Bros, Cartoon Network, Disney and Nickelodeon. They are steadily becoming the go-to animation studio in South East Asia for international studios and broadcasters that want to produce high-end 2D animation.
Andrew is the Managing Director and the “right brain” of the company, overseeing the creative production and operations. He holds a Masters degree in Urban Planning from Universiti Sains Malaysia and has worked for Bentley Systems, handling channel sales for geo-engineering software in South East Asia. In July 2016, Andrew and CJ were selected as Endeavor Entrepreneurs in the 65th Endeavor International Selection Panel in Bali.
