Sharil Tarmizi

ASEAN Advisory

Sharil Tarmizi is a Senior Advisor at ASEAN Advisory, a boutique advisory firm under ZICO Group and the former Chairman and Chief Executive of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) from October 2011 to December 2014.

Sharil started his working life in Malaysia as a lawyer with Messrs Azman Davidson & Co and Messrs Zaid Ibrahim & Co, Malaysia’s largest law firm. He has worked on numerous privatization projects that Malaysia was undertaking in the late 1990s, such as the development of Putrajaya and the Multimedia SuperCorridor initiative, before embarking on technology legal practice which, at the time, was a first for any legal firm in the country. Sharil was then invited to join the MCMC for the first time in to head MCMC’s Industry Development initiatives. He has then held several roles including Commission Member of the MCMC, making him the youngest Commission Member in the history of the country and the first time ever that any former member of staff of MCMC was appointed to the Board of MCMC, as well as the Chief Operating Officer. His notable achievements during his tenure includes a positive rating by Fitch Ratings for having the appropriately balanced regulatory environment to encourage telecoms investment, as well as the recognition given to Malaysia to be one of the few emerging economies for having the right framework for affordable broadband. Sharil graduated with a LL.B (Hons) from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth before qualifying as a Barrister, of Gray’s Inn, United Kingdom.
